RailTel Bags ₹167 Cr EPFO Cloud Deal as Margins Remain Key Monitorable

RailTel has secured a ₹166.8 crore cloud services contract from the EPFO, valid until February 2027. While the company is seeing strong order inflows and 20% revenue growth, investors are closely watching profit margins, which have remained flat due to rising project costs.

RailTel Corporation of India has announced a new contract from the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) worth ₹166.8 crore. This agreement is for providing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), which involves hosting and managing cloud computing resources for the organization. The contract is set to run for one year and is scheduled to be completed by February 9, 2027. This win adds to the company’s recent order pipeline, as it continues to secure government-led mandates.

This order is part of the company's broader strategy to expand its project-based business. Management has publicly reaffirmed a target of 20-25% revenue growth for the current financial year (FY27). To achieve this, the company is attempting to shift its revenue mix, aiming to move the ratio of projects versus telecom business from the current 60:40 level toward 70:30. The company is also looking to grow its data center revenue and implement its railway safety technology across more routes to drive future income.

While the company is successful in securing these large contracts, investors are keeping a close watch on profitability. In the April-June 2026 quarter (Q1 FY27), RailTel reported a 20.09% increase in revenue compared to the same period last year. However, the company’s net profit remained nearly flat, dropping by about 0.48%. This indicates that while the top-line revenue is growing, the cost of executing these new projects has risen, which is putting pressure on the company’s profit margins.

There is also a dependency on government and public sector clients. Because a significant portion of RailTel’s business comes from government entities, it is often tied to their specific pricing and payment timelines. Investors often monitor whether the company can maintain healthy margins while delivering these large-scale projects, as high competitive intensity in the sector can sometimes lead to lower pricing power.

On August 18, 2026, shares of RailTel were trading around ₹277, showing a decline of approximately 1% during the day. Looking ahead, the main area for investors to track will be the company’s ability to control project costs and show an improvement in profit margins in the coming quarterly results, alongside the timely execution of its current order backlog.
