Generational Succession Plan

Sunil Bharti Mittal has laid out a 10-year plan to hand over leadership of Bharti Airtel. His goal is for the promoter company, Bharti Telecom, to reclaim a controlling stake of over 50%. This move is part of Mittal's preparation for leadership transition. His term as Chairman was extended until September 30, 2031.

Stake Consolidation Goal

To increase Bharti Telecom's stake in Bharti Airtel by about 10%, substantial funds are needed. Mittal estimates this will require around ₹1 lakh crore, factoring in the current share price. He noted that Bharti Telecom historically held a controlling stake and expressed his belief in a single controlling owner. This plan means reducing Singtel's direct holding to consolidate ownership.

Expansion in Africa

Mittal also discussed expanding Bharti Airtel's control over Airtel Africa. The company recently approved increasing its stake by 16.31% to about 79% in a ₹28,220 crore share swap. The target is to reach the regulatory limit of 90% within seven years, using buybacks and potential investor exits. This aims to direct more profit to Bharti Airtel and boost shareholder returns.

Strategic Vision

Mittal shared a vision for Bharti Airtel to focus on strategic global asset acquisitions, differing from the dividend and buyback focus of some IT companies. He believes this approach keeps companies strong, preventing them from becoming "shadows of themselves." The group, founded in 1976, operates in telecom, space, digital infrastructure, and financial services. Bharti Airtel recently saw a 33.5% drop in net profit for the March 2026 quarter due to one-time provisions, though its annual revenue exceeded ₹2 lakh crore.
