India Telecom User Base Hits 1.3 Billion, Led by Jio, Airtel

India's mobile subscriber base crossed the 1.3 billion mark in September 2026, with a monthly growth of 0.51%. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel captured the majority of new users, highlighting the growing concentration in the sector. While the industry continues to expand, the performance gap between market leaders and smaller players remains a critical metric for investors to monitor regarding the sector's long-term health.

India’s wireless mobile subscriber base touched 1.3 billion in September 2026, marking a steady expansion as revealed by the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The sector recorded a net addition of 6.57 million subscribers during the month, reflecting a growth rate of 0.51 percent. This growth trajectory underscores the continued demand for digital connectivity, although the industry remains heavily concentrated in the hands of the top two private players.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel continued to command the market, adding 2.71 million and 2.69 million subscribers respectively. Together, these two telecommunications giants contributed over 5.3 million new connections in September. This concentration is a significant trend for investors, as it signals that the broader telecom sector is effectively becoming a two-horse race. The ability of these leaders to rapidly deploy 5G infrastructure and offer competitive data plans appears to be a key factor in attracting new users, while smaller players struggle to keep pace.

The disparity in performance is evident when looking at the rest of the market. While state-run BSNL reported a modest increase of 6.26 lakh users and Vodafone Idea managed to add 5.50 lakh subscribers, MTNL saw a decline, losing 6,628 subscribers in the same period. For investors, these figures highlight the ongoing challenges smaller and state-managed operators face in a market where pricing power and network coverage are crucial for retaining customers.

Regional penetration shows a persistent urban-rural divide. Urban markets continue to lead, with mobile subscriptions rising 0.67 percent to reach 753.85 million. In contrast, rural subscription growth was slower at 0.29 percent, totaling 546.14 million. While the overall teledensity has climbed to 95.52 percent, the fact that nearly 60 percent of all connections are still concentrated in urban centers suggests that there is still room for growth if operators can successfully expand their reach into deeper rural pockets.

Another important indicator of the competitive landscape is the mobile number portability data. During September, 16.77 million subscribers requested to switch their service providers. This high level of churn suggests that customers are actively evaluating their options, often looking for better service, coverage, or 5G benefits. Investors tracking the sector should monitor how this subscriber growth translates into the Average Revenue Per User. While a 1.3 billion subscriber base indicates deep penetration, the financial health of the telecom companies will depend on their ability to move customers toward higher-value data plans. Future updates to monitor include the pace of rural 5G expansion and whether the market leaders can maintain their dominance as they focus on monetizing their network investments.
