Bharti Airtel Fuels AI Data Center Growth with $1B Nxtra Funding
Overview

Bharti Airtel is injecting significant capital into its data center arm, Nxtra, securing $1 billion from investors including Alpha Wave Global and Carlyle to boost AI-ready infrastructure. This strategic move aims to scale Nxtra's capacity to 1 GW, targeting a 25% market share. The investment complements Bharti's steady telecom operations, growing African business, and anticipated ARPU increases, while the company also focuses on deleveraging its balance sheet.

Nxtra Secures $1B for AI Data Center Expansion

Bharti Airtel is significantly expanding its data center arm, Nxtra, by investing $1 billion to boost AI-ready infrastructure. The capital comes from investors including Alpha Wave Global ($435 million), Carlyle ($240 million), and Anchorage Capital ($35 million), with Airtel contributing $290 million. This funding values Nxtra at about $3.1 billion. The goal is to scale Nxtra's capacity from 300 MW to 1 GW, aiming for a 25% share of the Indian data center market. This expansion targets the growing demand for AI and cloud services from businesses, hyperscalers, and governments. Bharti Airtel is also partnering with Google on gigawatt-scale AI data center campuses. Nxtra is using AI for tasks like predictive maintenance and improving energy efficiency.

Core Telecom Business and Financial Strength

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel's core telecommunications business shows steady performance. The company is seeing consistent subscriber growth, with annual expansion projected at 2.9% and data subscriber growth at 9.7% from FY2021-26. This helps secure market share against competitors like Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea. Analysts expect a 10-12% tariff hike in upcoming quarters, alongside data monetization, to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). ARPU was around ₹256 in Q2FY26. Operations in Africa are also performing well, with a weaker rupee potentially boosting returns. Bharti Airtel is also strengthening its finances. A recent final call on rights issue shares raised ₹15,800 crore, expected to bring bank debt close to zero. Free Cash Flow (FCF) remained strong at ₹47,800 crore in 9MFY26, aiding deleveraging and potential dividends. India business FCF is forecast to reach ₹36,100 crore by FY26.

Market Opportunity and Competitive Landscape

Bharti Airtel's move into data centers with Nxtra aims to capitalize on India's growing digital infrastructure. India's telecom market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 7.48% from 2026-2034, fueled by smartphone use and 5G. The data center sector itself is projected for significant growth, with an estimated CAGR of 21% between 2024 and 2030. Nxtra's plan for 1 GW capacity and a 25% market share positions it among key industry players. Competitors include STT GDC India, CtrlS Datacenters, and Netmagic. Bharti Airtel's ARPU is currently higher than Reliance Jio's, showing a strong position in its core telecom business. Analysts generally hold a positive view, with most recommending 'buy' and an average 12-month price target around ₹2,350-₹2,379. The company's P/E ratio is about 35.5x, aligned with the telecom sector average of 35.6x.

Risks and Challenges

However, risks remain for Bharti Airtel. The debt-to-equity ratio, while decreasing, is still a factor, standing at 75.6% (total) and 59.2% (net) as of March 2025. Interest costs represented 12.58% of operating revenues in FY2025. Nxtra's ambitious expansion, especially for AI facilities, requires significant funding and carries execution risks. Competition from Reliance Jio is intense, and while Vodafone Idea faces challenges, the overall competitive market remains active. Past regulatory hurdles, such as adjusted gross revenue (AGR) payments, have impacted the sector. Questions also arise about capital allocation to ventures like Airtel Money and the group's overall leverage, despite deleveraging efforts. Nxtra's success will depend on turning large data center investments into consistent, scaled profitability.

Analyst Sentiment and Growth Prospects

Analyst sentiment is largely positive for Bharti Airtel, with 27 out of 31 analysts recommending 'buy'. The average 12-month price target is around ₹2,350, suggesting an upside potential of over 28%. Future growth is expected from ongoing ARPU increases due to tariff adjustments and 5G adoption, along with subscriber additions and Nxtra's expansion. Successfully executing the AI data center strategy is seen as a key long-term value driver, positioning the company to gain from India's digitalization. The potential listing of Reliance Jio could also boost sector valuations.
