eBay To Cut 1,000 Jobs As Part Of 9% Workforce Reduction

E-commerce giant eBay is laying off approximately 1,000 employees, representing 9% of its total workforce. This follows an earlier round of cuts in February, as the company attempts to lower operating costs and shift its focus toward high-growth categories like luxury items and collectibles ahead of its upcoming earnings results.

eBay is reducing its global staff by 9%, which involves cutting roughly 1,000 full-time roles. This is the company's second major layoff round in 2024, following a reduction of 800 positions in February. The decision comes as the firm looks to lower costs and realign its business toward specific high-value categories, including luxury items, collectibles, and refurbished goods.

The move is part of CEO Jamie Iannone’s plan to improve operational efficiency. While the company has been trying to boost profitability, it faces significant competitive pressure in the secondhand marketplace. Rivals like Vinted are expanding aggressively in the United States, which has forced eBay to defend its market share. This competition, combined with rising operational costs, has made it difficult for the company to maintain high growth rates.

Investors are now looking toward the company's financial results scheduled for October 28. The firm has also navigated challenges with the financial impact of its recent acquisitions. Recent disclosures indicated that the integration costs associated with the secondhand marketplace Depop were higher than initial estimates, adding approximately $200 million in expenses. These added costs have put extra pressure on the company's bottom-line performance.

The core challenge for eBay remains proving that its current strategy can deliver stable growth in a tight e-commerce market. While the company is focusing on core profitable segments, it must also manage costs without losing its customer base to emerging competitors. Investors will likely watch the upcoming results to see if these cost-cutting measures are successfully protecting profit margins and if the company can demonstrate a clear path to growth despite these ongoing pressures.
