YouTube Scales India Shopping Network with Amazon, AJIO Tie-ups

YouTube is adding major e-commerce players like Amazon, AJIO, and Meesho to its Indian affiliate program to boost social commerce. With creator payouts surging 160% in a year, this move aims to turn video content into direct storefronts. For investors, the focus is on how this shift impacts customer acquisition costs for retail giants and revenue models for the digital creator economy.

YouTube is significantly expanding its e-commerce affiliate program in India by integrating major retail giants into its platform. New partners joining the network include Amazon, AJIO, Meesho, Snapdeal, and Tata CLiQ. This adds to the existing roster of retail platforms already using the service, such as Flipkart, Myntra, and Nykaa. By consolidating these fragmented marketplaces into a video-first experience, the platform aims to capture a larger share of the growing social commerce sector.

The strategic value for these e-commerce retailers is direct access to a massive user base. YouTube currently reports over 450 million logged-in users in India searching for retail-related content, with shopping-focused watch time increasing by 55% year-over-year. For retail platforms, partnering with content creators who already have an established and trusted audience can be a cost-effective way to acquire new customers compared to traditional advertising methods.

Financial data indicates that the creator economy is expanding rapidly. Average payouts to Indian content creators through this affiliate program rose by over 160% between the first quarters of 2025 and 2026. This growth rate significantly outperforms the global average of 100%. Currently, participation among eligible Indian creators has tripled compared to the previous year, with over 19 million videos now tagged with products to create active storefronts.

To support this growth, the platform is introducing generative AI tools to improve the shopping experience. A new feature, 'Ask YouTube for Shopping,' allows viewers to ask voice-based questions about products, even on connected TV devices. Additionally, the company is automating global monetization for Indian creators. This means product tags can now automatically adjust to local currencies and regional retailer deals based on the viewer's location, making it easier for creators to earn commissions from international viewers.

While this expansion offers new revenue streams, investors should monitor the evolving regulatory environment regarding social commerce and influencer marketing. As the influence of content creators on consumer purchasing decisions grows, compliance with guidelines on transparency and product disclosure becomes important to maintain consumer trust. Furthermore, the success of this model will depend on the actual conversion rates achieved by these affiliate campaigns compared to traditional sales channels. The company plans to introduce 'Exclusive Affiliate Campaigns' in 2027, which will offer higher commission structures and incentives for creators using these new AI-powered tools.
