Visa, ONDC Partner to Boost India Tourism Discovery

Visa and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) have announced a partnership at the Global Fintech Festival 2026 to streamline tourism planning in India. The collaboration combines Visa’s digital infrastructure with ONDC’s network to create AI-driven travel itineraries. This strategic move aims to unify India's fragmented tourism market and increase visibility for local businesses, though execution remains the key monitorable.

Visa and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) have announced a strategic collaboration at the Global Fintech Festival 2026, aimed at transforming how travelers discover tourism experiences in India. By integrating Visa’s digital commerce capabilities with ONDC’s open network infrastructure, the initiative intends to simplify the travel planning process for both domestic and international tourists.

The primary objective of this partnership is to address the fragmentation currently seen in India’s tourism sector. By leveraging AI-driven itineraries and the open network architecture, the project seeks to connect travelers directly with local businesses and unique experiences. This effort aims to help small and medium-sized tourism enterprises gain visibility, potentially offering a level playing field by reducing reliance on a few large travel aggregators.

For the Open Network for Digital Commerce, this marks a strategic expansion into the services-heavy tourism market. The organization, which has already established a significant footprint in retail and logistics, has confirmed support from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture for this new vertical. By creating a trusted digital layer, ONDC intends to encourage users to explore destinations beyond traditional tourism hubs.

Investors should note that ONDC is a government-backed, non-profit organization and is not a publicly listed entity. Therefore, this partnership does not offer a direct investment opportunity into the network itself. Visa, which is a publicly traded company on the NYSE, is utilizing this partnership as a pilot project to integrate its digital payment and technology stack into a new domain. As this is a strategic exploration rather than a large-scale financial commitment, it is unlikely to have an immediate material impact on Visa’s global financial results.

The path forward involves significant execution challenges. The tourism sector in India is highly fragmented, with diverse regional players and varying levels of digital adoption. Success will depend on the network’s ability to scale demand-side participation—meaning getting enough travelers to actually use the platform—and ensuring that local sellers can reliably integrate with the system. Because this is a nascent initiative, the primary monitorables for observers will be the pilot project's adoption rates, the effectiveness of the AI itineraries, and the ability of the partners to onboard diverse tourism service providers without technical friction.
