Data centers have become massive consumers of power, with BloombergNEF data projecting that US-based facilities alone could account for 20% of the nation’s electricity usage by 2035, compared to approximately 5.9% currently. This rapid growth has forced companies to hunt for alternative power solutions and more efficient hardware to maintain their operations.

Temasek has begun backing companies that work on these technological solutions. One example is the firm’s investment in CuspAI, a UK-based company focused on creating more efficient ways to produce semiconductors. By reducing the reliance on certain rare metals and redesigning chip architecture, these companies aim to provide hardware that performs the same tasks with less power. While many of these AI model architectures are still in early stages and have yet to be proven at a massive scale, Temasek views these developments as key to mitigating the environmental and financial costs associated with high-intensity computing.

For investors and market participants, the next steps include tracking the commercial adoption of these new chip architectures and the timeline for these energy-efficient models to reach large-scale implementation.
