The ambitious ₹27,000 crore semiconductor manufacturing facility in Jagiroad, Assam, is on track to commence production within the financial year 2027, according to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw. The announcement followed a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Boosting Domestic Chip Production
Vaishnaw expressed optimism about the project's progress, highlighting that the Jagiroad plant is set to become a cornerstone of India's drive for semiconductor self-sufficiency. The facility, operated by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), will employ advanced packaging technologies. It is designed to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily, catering to critical sectors like automotive, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
Beyond its technological significance, the plant is projected to generate substantial socio-economic benefits for the region. An estimated 15,000 direct jobs and an additional 11,000-13,000 indirect employment opportunities are expected, fostering regional economic growth. The facility's high-capacity output aims to serve both domestic and international markets, positioning India as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Training Initiatives Underway
Complementing the manufacturing plant, the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) is developing training programs to equip young citizens with the necessary skills for semiconductor manufacturing. This dual approach, focusing on both production capacity and skilled workforce development, is crucial for establishing a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
