Tata Communications Shares Rise 2% After AI Partnership News

Tata Communications shares climbed 2.05% to Rs 1,792.40 on Monday. The company recently announced a partnership with Tata Tele Business Services to improve AI infrastructure for small and medium businesses. Investors are weighing this growth initiative against a recent 36% decline in annual net profit for the 2026 fiscal year.

Tata Communications shares traded at Rs 1,792.40 on Monday, marking a 2.05% increase. As a member of the Nifty Midcap 150 index, the company remains a key player in India's digital infrastructure sector. This latest price movement follows the company's announcement of a new collaboration with Tata Tele Business Services. The partnership is designed to provide unified artificial intelligence infrastructure for small and medium-sized businesses in India, signaling the company's intent to capture growth in the rapidly evolving AI services market.

Financial Performance and Profitability Challenges

While the company has maintained a trend of consistent annual revenue growth over the last five years, recent financial data highlights areas of pressure. In the fiscal year 2026, revenue rose 7.33% to reach Rs 24,802.72 crore compared to Rs 23,108.59 crore in fiscal year 2025. However, net profit declined significantly by 36.44%, falling to Rs 1,006.27 crore from Rs 1,583.15 crore in the previous year. Consequently, earnings per share dropped to Rs 35.14 from Rs 64.44.

Quarterly performance throughout the 2026 fiscal year also reflected volatility in bottom-line results. While revenue has shown a steady upward trajectory—growing to Rs 6,582.82 crore in the June 2026 quarter—net profit fluctuated, reaching a peak of Rs 357.12 crore in December 2025 before softening to Rs 125.37 crore by the quarter ended June 2026. This trend suggests that while the company is successfully expanding its topline, operational costs or other financial factors are currently impacting profitability.

Valuation and Capital Management

From a valuation perspective, the company's price-to-earnings ratio stood at 38.36x as of March 2026, compared to 24.49x in March 2025. This indicates that the stock is currently trading at a higher valuation relative to its recent earnings performance. On the balance sheet front, Tata Communications has worked to reduce its debt-to-equity ratio over the past five years, which may provide more financial stability despite the recent dip in profits.

In terms of shareholder returns, the company declared a final dividend of Rs 17.50 per share in April 2026, with an effective date in June. Additionally, the company recently announced the issuance of stock options under its 2023 employee plan, which is a common mechanism used by large firms to align employee incentives with long-term performance. Moving forward, investors may track whether the new AI-focused partnership can lead to improved margins and help the company stabilize its net profit in upcoming quarters.
