Spanning between 2,000 and 3,000 acres, this project aims to create a dedicated ecosystem for artificial intelligence. The Tamil Nadu government has announced an ambitious plan to establish integrated AI Cities, aiming to position the state as a premier hub for artificial intelligence research and development. According to Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, and Digital Services R. Kumar, these hubs will function as comprehensive ecosystems rather than standard industrial parks. The design includes space for AI-focused companies, startups, global capability centers, and academic institutions.

The scale of this proposal is significant, with plans to develop a total area ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 acres. The state is currently evaluating multiple potential sites in and around Chennai as well as in other key districts to host these facilities. The initial phase of construction is planned to begin on a 100-acre plot, though official timelines for the completion and full occupancy of the project remain subject to further government updates.

A central focus of this policy is the development of a future-ready workforce. Beyond infrastructure, the state intends to integrate AI education directly into the school curriculum, starting from Class 1 through Class 12. By building these foundational skills at an early stage, the government aims to create a large pool of AI-literate talent to support the operational needs of the companies expected to occupy these zones.

From an investor perspective, this initiative highlights the government's strategy to attract technology investment through physical infrastructure and long-term educational shifts. Global interest in such zones is often high, as firms seek specialized locations that offer integrated research and talent advantages. However, the success of such massive infrastructure projects often depends on the state’s ability to secure land, provide consistent utilities like power and high-speed connectivity, and ensure the necessary administrative support to attract major tech players.
