TDB Selects 5 Deep-Tech Startups for RDI Fund Support

The Technology Development Board has selected five deep-tech startups to receive funding under India's Rs 1 trillion RDI initiative. Startups in space, healthcare, and energy storage will receive milestone-based capital, provided they also secure matching private investment. This model aims to reduce dependency on foreign technology while ensuring disciplined execution of research projects.

The Technology Development Board (TDB) has officially initiated its funding program under India's Rs 1 trillion Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) fund. The board has selected an initial group of five deep-tech startups, allocating a dedicated pool of Rs 2,000 crore to drive advancements in critical domestic technologies. This marks a strategic shift in government support, moving toward a co-investment model that requires startups to bring in private capital alongside state funding.

Milestone-Based Funding Model

Unlike traditional government grants that often lack performance-linked conditions, this RDI funding is strictly milestone-based. Disbursements are tied to the achievement of specific technical and financial targets. This approach is intended to manage the high risks associated with deep-tech sectors, where product development cycles can last several years. By mandating matching private investment, the TDB aims to ensure that projects have market validation and professional oversight.

Space and Defense Projects

Dhruva Space has been selected for Project Garud, receiving Rs 10.5 crore to develop an indigenous 500 kg-class communication satellite platform. This initiative focuses on modular design to enable scalable manufacturing for satellite constellations, with the goal of reducing reliance on imported satellite components. In the defense and logistics space, EndureAir Systems has been granted Rs 3 crore to develop the SABAL-200. This heavy-lift unmanned aerial system is designed to carry 200 kg payloads, specifically targeting applications for border troop supply and remote infrastructure logistics.

Healthcare and Energy Storage

In the healthcare sector, Noccarc is developing a mobile life support system, with a Rs 2.3 crore project proposal that blends state support with private funds. The platform aims to provide ICU-grade capabilities for ambulances and underserved medical facilities. Eyestem Research has been sanctioned Rs 12.5 crore to work on cell therapies for incurable conditions, such as dry age-related macular degeneration and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally, e-TRNL Energy will receive Rs 9.4 crore to advance next-generation lithium-ion battery technology, a critical area for India's domestic energy storage roadmap.

Investors should note that while this government backing provides a vote of confidence, these ventures remain in the research and development phase. The primary monitorable for the success of these initiatives will be the ability of these startups to hit their defined technical milestones and secure the necessary private follow-on funding. Future updates will likely center on the progression of these prototypes toward commercial viability and the subsequent release of tranches from the TDB fund.
