Startup India Names 12 Finalists for Deep Tech Challenge

The DPIIT and Avaana Capital have selected 12 finalists for the third edition of the Deep Tech Innovation Challenge. These startups represent emerging fields like space tech, biotech, and advanced energy. As these are private, early-stage firms, they are not listed on stock exchanges, but their progress highlights long-term technology trends that are relevant to broader industrial growth in India.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), through the Startup India initiative, has announced the 12 finalists for the third edition of the Avaana – Startup India Grand Challenge for Deep Tech Innovation. The challenge, held in partnership with venture capital firm Avaana Capital, aims to provide these early-stage companies with non-dilutive grants, mentorship, and opportunities to run commercial pilot projects.

It is important for readers to note that the companies selected are private entities. The finalists were chosen from a pool of over 800 applicants across five specific domains: Energy & Mobility, Supply Chains & Advanced Manufacturing, Biotech & Advanced Materials, AI & Automation, and Space Technologies. For example, some finalists are focused on high-efficiency energy storage, such as advanced solar modules and zinc-ion batteries, while others are developing infrastructure for space communications or using AI for medical screening.

These focus areas are central to India's "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision, which emphasizes indigenous capability in critical technologies. By fostering startups in these capital-intensive fields, the government and partner firms aim to bridge the gap between research and commercial application. Such initiatives often serve as a bellwether for the industrial sectors that are likely to attract significant private and public investment over the next decade.

Industry and Institutional Involvement

The evaluation process is managed by a Grand Jury featuring representatives from banking, venture capital, and major industrial conglomerates. This level of participation is noteworthy because it facilitates direct access for these startups to established players in the energy, automotive, and technology sectors. For the broader market, the outcome of these challenges provides insight into which technologies are being validated by industry experts and are deemed ready for pilot implementation.

The finalists will present their innovations on August 27, 2026, with the program concluding on September 11 at Vanijya Bhavan, Delhi. Investors and market observers may track the pilot project successes of these startups as an indicator of the maturity and commercial viability of India's research-led startup ecosystem.
