SpaceX Invests $329M in Tesla Megapacks for AI Centers

SpaceX has spent $329 million year-to-date on Tesla Megapacks to power its expanding AI data center operations. For Tesla shareholders, these purchases provide revenue for the energy storage business, though they also highlight governance considerations regarding related-party transactions between the companies.

SpaceX has significantly increased its procurement of Tesla’s Megapack battery storage systems, reporting an expenditure of $295 million during the second quarter of 2026. This brings the total investment by the aerospace company on these energy products to $329 million for the year so far. These battery units are being deployed to support the growing power requirements of AI data centers, including those that support the operations of xAI.

Supporting AI Power Demands

Modern artificial intelligence data centers operate with highly unpredictable power needs. When computing systems process complex AI tasks, the energy draw can spike suddenly. Tesla’s Megapacks act as a buffer in this environment, storing energy and releasing it instantly to stabilize the power supply. By using these systems, SpaceX aims to ensure that its data centers have consistent energy, which helps avoid utility charges associated with peak demand and prevents system outages during high-load periods.

Governance and Related-Party Transactions

These transactions are conducted under Tesla’s Related Person Transactions Policy, given that Elon Musk holds leadership roles and significant ownership in both Tesla and SpaceX. For Tesla investors, this business relationship is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it guarantees demand for Tesla’s Energy segment, which has become an increasingly important part of the company’s revenue growth. On the other hand, the deep financial and operational integration between these companies is a common area of focus for market analysts.

Investors often look for confirmation that such deals are conducted at market-standard prices to ensure transparency. The interconnected nature of these entities means that the financial health and operational decisions of one company can have implications for the others, particularly regarding capital allocation. Tesla is currently under pressure to balance its heavy capital spending on AI and autonomous driving technology with its cash flow generation, and heavy reliance on related-party orders is a factor that market observers monitor closely.

Broader Financial and Sector Trends

The AI infrastructure sector is currently witnessing high demand for reliable power solutions, as the energy needs of large-scale models continue to rise. While the Megapack purchases are a positive signal for Tesla’s product adoption, the company faces scrutiny regarding its overall profitability and the financial sustainability of its aggressive expansion into AI and robotics. The market remains sensitive to any news that could signal shifts in demand or changes in how these Musk-led companies manage their resources. Moving forward, shareholders will likely track Tesla’s future quarterly filings for further details on related-party revenue and updates on the margins of its energy storage division.
