With entry-level devices expected to hit ₹15,000, market experts suggest that deep structural changes in domestic electronics manufacturing are required to maintain affordability.
India’s smartphone market is facing a significant pricing shift as global cost increases for key components, particularly memory modules, force manufacturers to raise retail prices. Recent data indicates that budget-friendly smartphones, which were previously accessible around the ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 range, have seen price hikes of 20% to 40% for many popular models. This trend is causing a notable shift in consumer behavior, with industry research suggesting that more than half of potential buyers are delaying their device upgrades as the cost of basic technology becomes increasingly prohibitive.
The Impact on Digital Access
The rising cost of hardware presents a risk to the widespread adoption of digital services in India. A large portion of the active user base relies on devices priced under ₹10,000 to access essential services, including Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions and government welfare transfers. As the market shifts, industry analysts estimate that the entry-level price for a reliable smartphone could rise toward ₹15,000, with a functional experience likely requiring a spend of ₹18,000. While India has become a hub for mobile phone assembly, the industry remains highly dependent on imported semiconductors and memory components. Because these parts are sourced from global markets, local assemblers are vulnerable to sudden supply chain disruptions and price volatility. To mitigate these risks, industry experts argue that the focus must move beyond simple assembly toward the local production of complex sub-assemblies, such as printed circuit boards, display modules, and camera components.
Path Toward Component Indigenization
Addressing these challenges requires a shift toward deeper, structural manufacturing capabilities. This includes developing domestic infrastructure for Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) services. By packaging imported silicon wafers domestically, manufacturers can potentially reduce foreign markups and protect themselves against global price spikes. Additionally, diversifying supply networks to include more regional manufacturing corridors could help insulate the domestic market from heavy reliance on a single source.
