Sarvam AI Valuation Hits $1.5 Billion With Nvidia Funding

Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI has secured $74 million in a funding round led by Nvidia, pushing its valuation to $1.51 billion. This investment supports the startup’s plan to develop large-scale artificial intelligence models tailored for Indian languages and specific local applications.

Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence startup Sarvam AI is set to raise approximately $74 million, or about ₹700 crore, as part of an extended Series B funding round. The investment is led by global chipmaker Nvidia, which is contributing roughly $25 million to the company. Other participants include Glade Brook Capital and Gaja Capital, which are investing approximately $20 million and $10 million respectively.

This capital injection brings the company's total funding to nearly $349 million and sets its post-money valuation at $1.51 billion. This achievement reinforces Sarvam AI's position as one of the few Indian startups in the AI sector to cross the $1 billion valuation threshold, a milestone it reached earlier this year following a $234 million round led by HCLTech and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Strategic Focus and Infrastructure

Sarvam AI, co-founded by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, focuses on building foundational AI models that cater specifically to Indian languages and local enterprise needs. The company’s work has garnered attention for its role in the IndiaAI Mission, a government-led initiative aimed at developing sovereign AI capabilities. By focusing on indigenous models, the startup seeks to reduce dependence on foreign AI infrastructure.

To power its next stage of development, the company plans to train a trillion-plus parameter foundation model. This ambitious project requires significant computational power, which the founders intend to secure by utilizing a cluster of 10,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs. These processors are among the most advanced in the industry and are essential for high-end applications like cybersecurity, complex coding, and scientific research.

Investor and Sector Context

The participation of HCLTech, which holds a 10.46% stake following its previous investment, highlights the growing interest of large Indian IT service companies in securing AI capabilities to remain competitive. As Indian enterprises look to integrate generative AI into their workflows, having a local partner that understands regional linguistic and market nuances provides a strategic advantage.

While the company has achieved rapid valuation growth, the long-term success of such startups depends on their ability to translate high-end model development into profitable enterprise solutions. Investors will likely monitor how effectively the company manages the significant capital spending required for GPU infrastructure and whether it can successfully scale its models for widespread commercial use. The key monitorable remains the successful commissioning and utilization of its planned 10,000 GPU cluster, which will be critical for achieving its technical goals.
