Reddit Tests Search Ads as User Growth Stalls, Shares Tumble

Reddit is trialing advertisements in its search results to drive revenue after its stock dropped 29% following mixed Q3 2026 earnings. While the company reported 53% revenue growth, investor concerns are rising due to stagnant user numbers and declining referral traffic from AI-powered search engines.

Reddit has begun testing advertisements within its search results pages, a move aimed at extracting more value from its user base as the company faces a challenging growth environment. This new monetization effort comes just days after the platform's shares experienced a sharp decline of approximately 29% following its third-quarter earnings report on October 29, 2026.

While the company posted strong financial results, with total revenue rising 53% year-over-year to $895 million and ad revenue jumping 54% to $847 million, shareholders reacted negatively to underlying operational trends. Global daily active unique users remained flat at 130.3 million, and notably, U.S. daily active users contracted, falling to 50.7 million. This disconnect between strong top-line financial growth and weakening user engagement has become a primary point of friction for investors.

The search ad trial represents a strategic response to structural changes in how internet users access information. The rise of AI-powered search features, such as Google's AI Overviews, has begun to disrupt the digital ecosystem by delivering answers directly on search pages, which reduces the need for users to click through to external sites like Reddit. Consequently, Reddit reported that organic search referral traffic has declined by over 1 million per week during October. This trend poses a material risk to the platform's long-term ability to attract new users and keep engagement levels high.

In a bid to stabilize traffic and enhance data quality, the company is shifting toward a mandatory logged-in experience. By requiring users to sign in to access more content, Reddit aims to capture deeper behavioral data, which helps improve ad targeting. Furthermore, this change acts as a defensive measure to restrict unauthorized AI scraping of its platform content. However, this strategy carries potential risks, including the possibility of user churn or suppressed growth if the friction of logging in discourages casual visitors.

Looking ahead, the company’s guidance for the fourth quarter—projecting revenue between $1.00 billion and $1.03 billion—has been viewed cautiously by the market, as it sits below some analyst expectations. The key monitorable for investors will be whether this new search ad placement can effectively offset the loss of organic referral traffic and if the shift to a logged-in-only model can succeed without further damaging active user counts.
