PhonePe Uses AI to Scale 10 Billion Monthly Transactions

PhonePe is deploying advanced AI agents to manage over 10 billion monthly transactions, significantly reducing operational costs and human intervention. While this boosts efficiency for the fintech leader, the company remains private as it navigates regulatory challenges and a path toward profitability.

PhonePe, the dominant player in India’s UPI ecosystem, is significantly shifting its operational model by deploying 'agentic' AI tools to handle its massive scale of over 10 billion transactions per month. By allowing AI agents to independently manage complex tasks, the company has managed to maintain a lean support structure, with a ratio of one agent for every 20 million transactions.

The company’s push into automation is not merely a technical upgrade but a strategic effort to control costs. PhonePe has reported that its new AI systems now resolve 92% of customer support queries and handle 80% of fraud investigations end-to-end. This automation has dramatically lowered the cost per fraud investigation, bringing it down from roughly ₹50 to between ₹5 and ₹15. For a company handling payments at this population scale, such efficiency gains are critical for improving margins.

Beyond consumer support, PhonePe is using AI to streamline its backend. Internal tools like 'TraceMind' and 'KadhAI' are helping developers write code and debug errors significantly faster. These efficiencies are essential as the company works to improve its bottom line. In its recent financial disclosures, PhonePe reported operating revenue of ₹7,920 crore but also a consolidated net loss of ₹2,792 crore. The company is currently working to close this gap by scaling its digital services while keeping operational overheads low.

Investors and market observers should note that PhonePe is not a publicly traded company. While it has converted into a public limited entity and previously received approval for an IPO, the listing has been deferred due to market volatility. The company's future value will depend on its ability to sustain these profit margins and grow beyond its core payment services into areas like lending and wealth management.

The path forward involves significant external risks. The regulatory environment remains a key monitorable, particularly regarding potential caps on UPI market share, which could limit the company's dominance. Furthermore, the fintech sector faces ongoing scrutiny from regulators regarding revenue models, including restrictions on certain payment types and gaming-related income. The success of these AI initiatives will be tested by the company’s ability to maintain high service quality while scaling these new business lines under a tight regulatory framework.
