PhonePe Rebrands Indus Appstore, Signals IPO Ambitions

PhonePe is merging its Indus Appstore into the main brand as 'PhonePe Appstore' to streamline its services. This move expands the platform into a digital marketplace for vouchers and gift cards, aiming to boost user interaction ahead of a potential public listing. Investors are tracking how this consolidation affects user retention and long-term profitability in a competitive fintech space.

PhonePe has officially rebranded its Indus Appstore to PhonePe Appstore, a move that signals the company’s push to unify its wide range of financial and digital services under one identity. This transition follows a similar branding update for its stockbroking platform, previously known as Share.Market, which has been renamed to PhonePe Invest. These structural changes are widely viewed as part of an effort to streamline the brand’s product ecosystem as the company works toward a potential initial public offering.

Beyond just a name change, the platform is expanding its functionality. It is shifting from being solely an app marketplace to acting as a broader digital shopping hub. Users can now purchase gift cards and vouchers for various services, including platforms like Uber, Blinkit, and BigBasket. By adding these lifestyle services, the company is attempting to increase the time users spend inside the app, a strategy common among companies aiming to build a so-called super app ecosystem.

Scaling and Infrastructure Reach

To build a viable alternative to the dominant Google Play Store, PhonePe has focused heavily on scale. The company reports that its app store infrastructure is already present on more than 200 million smartphones. This reach was significantly aided by a multi-year partnership with Xiaomi India established in early 2025, along with existing agreements with smartphone manufacturers like Motorola and Alcatel. Having the app store pre-installed on devices is a critical hurdle for any new platform trying to gain traction in the Android ecosystem.

Strategic Challenges and Risks

While the expansion in user reach is significant, the business model faces notable challenges. The app store and digital marketplace sector in India is highly competitive, dominated by Google’s Android ecosystem. Convincing users to switch from established app stores remains a difficult task that typically requires high spending on marketing and incentives. Additionally, the move into gift cards and vouchers is a low-margin business that relies on high transaction volumes to be profitable.

Investors may also note recent leadership changes within the platform. Akash Dongre, the co-founder and chief product officer, stepped down in June 2026. His exit marks the departure of the last original member from the legacy Indus OS team that PhonePe acquired in 2022. While the company continues its integration plans, changes at the leadership level can sometimes affect project execution and internal culture. Going forward, market observers will be watching for signs of sustainable revenue growth from these new marketplace features and the platform's ability to maintain high user engagement without excessive spending.
