Oracle is reportedly cutting approximately 3,000 roles in India, while Microsoft has initiated performance improvement plans for around 500 local employees. Historically, companies maintained large 'benches' of employees to manage project fluctuations. That model is being replaced by demand-driven, project-specific recruitment. The focus is shifting toward high-end engineering expertise in fields like cybersecurity, data analytics, and generative AI. Consequently, campus recruitment and generalist hiring have slowed, with many fresh graduates facing prolonged onboarding delays.

For investors, these shifts highlight a focus on operational efficiency. By reducing reliance on legacy operational roles, these firms aim to improve profit margins and agility. However, this strategy carries execution risks. Companies must successfully integrate new AI technologies into their core offerings while managing the cultural and operational friction of significant workforce restructuring. The success of these moves will depend on whether the remaining, specialized workforce can deliver the expected productivity gains.
