OpenAI, Anthropic Prepare for IPOs as AI Valuations Face Test

OpenAI and Anthropic are moving toward public listings, marking a shift from private funding to public scrutiny. This transition will force transparency regarding their financial health, with investors preparing to see actual revenue, costs, and profit figures that were previously private.

OpenAI and Anthropic are preparing for initial public offerings (IPOs), a move that marks a major turning point for the artificial intelligence sector. For years, these companies have relied on private capital rounds, where valuations were based on growth projections and investor sentiment. Now, these firms must move into public markets, which require immediate, audited financial transparency. This shift is crucial for Indian investors to understand, as it will replace speculative pricing with hard, public data.

The Financial Contrast

While both companies are leaders in artificial intelligence, their financial paths appear very different. Financial reports indicate that OpenAI is projected to face a loss of approximately $14 billion for the 2026 fiscal year, with no expectation of reaching profitability until 2029. This model prioritizes aggressive growth and infrastructure spending over immediate bottom-line earnings.

In contrast, Anthropic has reported preliminary revenue of roughly $10.9 billion to $11.5 billion for the second quarter of 2026 and has claimed positive adjusted operating income during that period. Public markets typically value profitable companies differently than those that rely on continuous cash infusions. Investors will soon be able to compare these divergent strategies once the companies release their S-1 filings, which provide the first official, audited look at their revenue, expenses, and unit costs.

Market Lessons from Recent IPOs

Public market entry does not guarantee smooth price performance. Investors can look at the recent example of SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX), which began trading on June 12, 2026, at an IPO price of $135. Following its first quarterly earnings report, the stock experienced significant volatility. This illustrates how public investors often react sharply when they get their first look at the real, liquid valuation of a company, regardless of the technology’s promise.

Investor Risks and Monitorables

One of the main risks investors should watch is the difference in accounting methods, particularly regarding "adjusted" profit metrics. These figures can sometimes mask the true, underlying costs of running high-compute AI models. Furthermore, broader macroeconomic factors—such as inflation, interest rate decisions, and geopolitical tensions—remain significant forces that influence how much appetite the market has for new tech IPOs.

The most important step for investors will be tracking the release of official exchange filings. These documents will finally reveal the true gross margins and customer concentration of these massive entities. Until these numbers are released, the actual financial sustainability of the current AI boom remains a subject of market debate.
