Indian stock markets closed higher on Wednesday, led by a 2.3% gain in the Nifty IT index. The rally comes despite rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and higher crude oil prices. Investors are focusing on strong industrial production data, which showed a 7.3% year-on-year growth for June, while awaiting upcoming quarterly earnings results.
Indian equity markets showed resilience on Wednesday, posting strong gains even as a ballistic missile attack on U.S. forces in West Asia triggered global geopolitical concerns. The benchmark indices shrugged off the volatility, with investors shifting their focus toward domestic growth metrics and specific sector performances.
IT Services Lead Market Rally
The Nifty IT index emerged as the day's top performer, climbing 2.3%. This marks the fourth straight day of gains for the sector, pushing its monthly rally beyond 17%. Market analysis suggests that investors are increasingly attracted to the sector's financial profile, particularly large-cap IT services firms that currently offer healthy free cash flow yields of over 5%. This domestic enthusiasm stands in contrast to semiconductor and AI-related stocks in South Korea and Taiwan, which faced selling pressure earlier in the day.
Industrial Growth and Sector Movements
Supporting the positive sentiment, official data for June indicated a robust 7.3% year-on-year expansion in India's industrial production. This is a notable acceleration from the 5% growth recorded in May. The manufacturing sector led this activity with a 7.8% increase, while electricity generation grew by 10.6%. Reflecting this trend, the Nifty Metal index rose 2%. While the broader market saw participation from the FMCG and pharmaceutical sectors, the Realty and Auto indices ended the day in the red.
Individual stock movements provided further color on investor behavior. Kaynes Technology gained over 13% after the company provided an update on its semiconductor supply chain expansion under the ISM 2.0 framework. Meanwhile, Phoenix Mills saw its stock rise after reporting a 23% increase in profit to ₹297 crore, supported by 13% revenue growth. In contrast, Adani Ports faced a decline in its share price, despite posting a 10% profit increase to ₹3,650 crore, as investors engaged in profit-booking following a period of strong performance.
Commodities and External Factors
Geopolitical uncertainty did drive Brent crude prices higher by more than 3%, moving toward $87 per barrel. Despite the rise in energy costs, the Indian rupee remained steady, appreciating 0.11% to trade around 95.62 against the U.S. dollar. This stability was aided by consistent foreign institutional investor flows and the overall strength in the domestic equity market. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve commentary regarding interest rate trajectories, as well as the next wave of domestic corporate earnings reports, including companies like Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Steel, scheduled for Thursday.
