Nifty IT Rises 2% as Investors Await Tech Mahindra, Wipro Results

The Nifty IT index gained 2.04% on Thursday, outpacing broader market declines as investors braced for the quarterly earnings of Tech Mahindra and Wipro. While the sector showed resilience, it continues to face challenges from global inflation and high interest rate concerns, which often impact technology spending by international clients.

The Nifty IT index stood out on Thursday, rising 2.04% to close at 30,785.45, even as broader markets struggled. This performance was largely driven by positive sentiment ahead of quarterly earnings reports from major players like Tech Mahindra and Wipro. Tech Mahindra saw its stock climb 3.83% to ₹1,635.50, while Wipro shares gained 1.39% to ₹173.29. Other major technology companies also supported the index, with HCL Technologies up 3.01% and Tata Consultancy Services gaining 2.44%.

This rally occurred while Asian markets, such as Japan's Nikkei and South Korea's Kospi, experienced sharp declines of 4.5% and 7% respectively. Global concerns about high inflation in the US and the possibility of sustained high interest rates have created an uncertain environment. For Indian IT firms, this environment is critical because a large portion of their revenue comes from international clients in the US and Europe. If these clients face higher costs or economic slowdowns, they may cut their technology budgets, which directly impacts the growth of Indian IT companies.

Historically, the Nifty IT index has had a difficult year, remaining about 19% lower than it started in 2026. The index is still far from its previous high of 40,000. Currently, the index is trading at a price-to-earnings multiple of 18.72, which reflects how the market is valuing the expected future earnings of these companies relative to their current stock prices.

While today’s price movement indicates market optimism, the actual performance will depend on the upcoming quarterly results. Beyond the profit and revenue numbers, investors will look for management commentary regarding future demand, project pipelines, and whether international clients are continuing to spend on software and IT services. The ability of these firms to maintain profit margins in a high-cost environment will remain a key monitorable in the coming quarters.
