Nifty IT Index Rises 3% as Indian Markets Defy Global Trends

Indian stock indices posted significant gains on Wednesday, led by a 3% surge in the Nifty IT index. Despite rising crude oil prices and global market volatility, investors showed renewed interest in Indian IT services firms, citing attractive valuations. Strong quarterly earnings from local companies and potential capital rotation from other Asian markets also supported the positive sentiment.

Indian equity markets staged a robust recovery on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, even as global markets grappled with uncertainty. The BSE Sensex closed with a gain of 827 points, or 1.07%, reaching 77,593, while the NSE Nifty 50 climbed 218 points, or 0.90%, to end the session at 24,203. This performance stands out against a backdrop of rising crude oil prices, which touched $87 per barrel, often a source of concern for the import-dependent Indian economy.

IT Sector Leads Market Gains

The rally was heavily concentrated in the Information Technology sector, with the Nifty IT index climbing nearly 3% during the session. This marked the fourth consecutive day of gains for the sector, which has collectively risen 9.8% in that period. Major companies including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL Technologies saw individual gains between 2% and 4%. Investors appear to be rotating back into these stocks, drawn by more attractive valuations following a period where global tech-focused stocks underwent a significant correction.

Earnings and Macro Factors

Supporting this sentiment are the first-quarter earnings for the current fiscal year, which have largely met or exceeded expectations. Analysts from Kotak Institutional Equities have noted that the market is finding confidence in the earnings outlook for Nifty 50 companies, driven by a combination of a low base in specific sectors and continued high levels of business activity. Furthermore, market experts suggest that turbulence in other Asian markets, particularly the 5% drop in South Korea’s KOSPI index, may be prompting a shift in capital toward Indian equities, which are currently viewed as offering better stability.

Technical Outlook and Future Risks

Technically, the Nifty 50's move above the 24,100–24,150 resistance band is viewed as a positive signal. Market analysts note that as long as the index maintains support above 23,880, the near-term momentum remains constructive, with potential to test higher levels around 24,400. However, investors are advised to monitor external triggers closely. The primary risk remains the upcoming US Federal Reserve interest rate decision. While many expect rates to remain unchanged, any unexpected policy shift could trigger a movement of capital out of emerging markets and back toward US assets, potentially putting pressure on Indian stock prices. Additionally, sustained high crude oil prices could act as a drag on the economy if they persist, impacting corporate margins and overall investor confidence in the coming months.
