Indian IT stocks recorded their sharpest weekly rise in nearly 20 years, with the Nifty IT index surging 11.72%. Investors shifted capital from volatile global AI-linked assets to Indian tech firms, betting on stable earnings. This market move added ₹2.75 trillion to the sector's total value.
The information technology sector in India saw a major surge this week, with the Nifty IT index rising 11.72% to close at 31,924.10. This performance marks the index's strongest weekly gain since April 2008. This movement came as global investors moved money away from risky assets linked to artificial intelligence and into the more stable software services sector in India.
Major companies within the index saw strong gains. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) rose 14.33% following news of $9.6 billion in new business deals and increasing revenue from AI services. Tech Mahindra surged 18.22% on better profit margins, while Infosys climbed 13.46% as the market prepared for positive earnings reports. These companies played a large part in helping the broader Nifty 50 index advance by 2.78% for the week.
While IT stocks performed well, some other sectors faced price pressure. Consumer goods companies, including Nestle India, fell 5.06% as rising costs caused concerns about profit margins. Healthcare stocks like Max Healthcare Institute and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise also saw declines. This divergence shows that investors currently prefer companies with clear and predictable earnings over those struggling with inflation and high operating costs.
Investors will likely track the upcoming quarterly financial results for these IT firms to see if the growth in margins and new deals matches current market expectations. Future performance will depend on whether companies can sustain these profit margins and continue winning large deals in a changing global demand environment.
