Netweb, E2E Networks Slide 5-7% Amid Global AI Caution

Indian AI-linked stocks faced selling pressure on Tuesday after global industry leaders called for a pause in advanced AI development. This shift, combined with rising oil prices and high US bond yields, has prompted investors to reassess growth expectations for the technology sector.

Indian stocks with exposure to the artificial intelligence and data-center sectors saw sharp declines on Tuesday. Netweb Technologies led the drop, falling approximately 6.77%, while E2E Networks shed 5% and Black Box declined by about 5.42%. These movements reflect a wider correction in technology equities, particularly those involved in providing the physical infrastructure, such as high-performance servers and data centers, that powers AI systems.

The AI Manifesto Impact

The immediate trigger for this sell-off was a high-profile manifesto signed by major figures in the technology industry, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, xAI’s Elon Musk, and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei. These leaders are advocating for a controlled slowdown in the development of frontier AI systems, citing concerns that current development speeds might outpace human safety oversight.

For investors, this news carries a specific financial implication. A large part of the investment case for Indian AI-linked firms has been the assumption of non-stop, rapid demand for hardware and infrastructure. If global AI development enters a phase of slower growth or stricter regulation, the pace of orders for data center hardware and server capacity may not meet previous, highly optimistic market expectations. Shareholders are now questioning whether the aggressive revenue growth targets set for these companies remain realistic in this new, more cautious environment.

Macroeconomic Pressures

Beyond the specific industry concerns regarding AI development, broader economic factors are intensifying the pressure on high-growth technology stocks. Brent crude oil prices have crossed the $105 per barrel mark, which typically signals rising inflationary pressure.

Simultaneously, the US 10-year Treasury yield is nearing 5%, its highest level in several years. When bond yields are high, the attractiveness of growth-focused tech stocks often diminishes. Investors generally find it less risky to park capital in stable, yield-bearing assets rather than speculative tech stocks that rely on heavy future earnings to justify their current valuations. This shift in capital is particularly difficult for companies that are currently spending large amounts on capital expansion and may rely on debt or external funding to fuel their growth.

What Investors Should Monitor

The upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting is a critical point to watch, as it will provide clues on the future path of interest rates. Investors should also track management commentary from AI-linked technology firms regarding their order books. The primary concern is whether the 'AI boom' infrastructure spending remains intact or if there will be a slowdown in project commissioning by large clients. Additionally, companies with higher debt levels may face increased financial pressure if interest rates remain elevated for longer than anticipated.
