NPCI Launches AiNxt and AtOM to Scale UPI Infrastructure

The National Payments Corporation of India has introduced AiNxt and AtOM, two AI-driven platforms to automate UPI workflows and speed up partner onboarding. With monthly UPI transactions exceeding 24.5 billion, these tools aim to reduce manual processing time for banks and payment service providers. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched two new AI-focused platforms, AiNxt and AtOM, at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. These tools are designed to modernize the underlying infrastructure of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which currently processes more than 24.5 billion transactions every month. As digital payment volumes in India continue to reach record levels, the NPCI is shifting toward agentic artificial intelligence to manage the increasing complexity of the national payment network.

Scaling UPI Through Automation

The UPI ecosystem involves a vast network of banks, payment service providers, and merchants, requiring significant manual effort for onboarding, testing, and system integration. The AtOM (Agentic Orchestration and Messaging) platform is built to handle these mechanical challenges. It replaces manual, human-centric processes with digitally signed and auditable workflows. By standardizing these lifecycle processes using JSON-RPC 2.0, the NPCI aims to significantly reduce the time it takes to deploy new features across the payment network. This move is intended to ensure that infrastructure can scale effectively without compromising on system stability or security.

AI Agent Development with AiNxt

While AtOM focuses on the operational side, AiNxt is designed to help organizations build and deploy their own AI agents. It functions as an enterprise-grade framework that supports a "bring-your-own-model" approach, allowing partners to integrate their preferred AI models for specific financial use cases. The platform provides tools like AiNxt OS and a Command Line Interface (CLI) to support a range of workflows, from simple no-code solutions to complex developer-heavy applications. This decentralized approach allows banks and fintech companies to innovate faster by creating tailored AI solutions within the secure environment of the UPI network.

Strategic Risks and Regulatory Monitorables

While the automation of payment infrastructure can improve efficiency and reduce costs for the broader fintech ecosystem, the shift to agentic AI introduces new challenges. A primary concern for regulators and institutional stakeholders is liability. As AI agents begin to handle payment instructions, determining accountability in the event of transaction errors, fraud, or system failures becomes more complex—specifically, whether the liability lies with the user, the bank, or the AI provider.

Furthermore, the transition from manual oversight to automated, machine-signed workflows requires rigorous security standards to maintain user trust. Investors and industry participants will be tracking how these platforms handle data privacy and security as the ecosystem expands to include more AI-driven automation. The long-term impact on operational margins for banks and payment service providers will depend on how quickly these organizations can adopt these tools and whether the platforms successfully reduce technical debt while maintaining compliance with evolving digital payment regulations.
