Microsoft has opened its 'India South Central' cloud region in Hyderabad, expanding its infrastructure to four cities. This move is part of a $20.5 billion investment plan aimed at capturing the growing demand for digital and AI services in India.
Microsoft has officially launched its fourth cloud region in India, located in Hyderabad, marking a significant step in the company's strategy to build out its physical infrastructure in the country. This new region, which the company calls 'India South Central,' includes three availability zones and uses zero-water cooling technology to manage the heat generated by its servers. This addition brings Microsoft's operational cloud footprint in India to four locations, joining existing centers in Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai.
This expansion is part of a larger, long-term financial commitment. Microsoft has pledged a total of USD 20.5 billion toward India’s digital and artificial intelligence infrastructure. This total amount combines two separate investment plans: a USD 3 billion commitment announced in January 2025 and a further USD 17.5 billion in December 2025. By establishing a major region in Hyderabad, Microsoft is positioning itself to capture growing demand from enterprise clients who need local data storage and faster network speeds.
The company has already reported interest from major Indian enterprises including HDFC Bank, Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv, and PB Pay. For these businesses, having a local cloud region allows them to process data faster and adhere to data sovereignty laws, which require sensitive information to be stored within the country.
For investors, this expansion highlights the massive capital spending required to operate in the cloud and AI sector. Competing with other global tech giants like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud requires consistent investment in high-performance servers, energy-efficient cooling systems, and reliable infrastructure.
