Meta Shares Rise 36% In September As Muse AI Drives Growth

Meta Platforms has rallied 36% this September as its new Muse AI assistant sees rapid adoption, pushing the company near a $2 trillion market valuation. While investor sentiment is positive, the company faces significant pressure from massive capital spending on AI infrastructure that is expected to impact free cash flow through 2028.

Strong Performance Driven by AI

Meta Platforms is experiencing a significant stock rally in September 2026, with shares climbing 36%. This marks the company's strongest monthly performance since July 2013. The primary driver behind this price move is the rapid consumer adoption of its Muse personal AI assistant, which has quickly gained popularity on major app stores. This success has helped strengthen investor confidence in Meta's ability to monetize its artificial intelligence initiatives, moving the stock closer to a $2 trillion valuation.

High Infrastructure Costs and Cash Flow Risks

While the stock's recent performance is positive, the company's aggressive expansion into AI infrastructure brings long-term financial questions. Meta’s capital spending is projected to reach $140 billion in 2026, a substantial increase that is nearly double the amount spent in 2025. This heavy investment cycle is expected to continue for several years, with projections indicating spending could rise further to $197 billion in 2027 and $215 billion by 2028.

This high level of spending is creating pressure on the company's cash position. Analysts estimate that free cash flow may turn negative, with a projected $6.4 billion shortfall for 2026 and a further $29.2 billion deficit in 2027. Investors are closely monitoring whether the revenue generated from new AI-integrated products can eventually offset these massive capital outlays.

Valuation and Market Positioning

Despite the significant capital expenditure, Meta is currently trading at 21 times forward earnings. This valuation is notably below the average of the Nasdaq 100 index, which suggests that the market is cautious about the heavy costs involved in building out its AI capabilities. The company is actively building its ecosystem through partnerships, including collaborations with Maplebear, the parent company of Instacart, and the travel giant Expedia, to integrate its AI tools into commercial platforms.

JPMorgan recently upgraded its outlook on the stock to overweight, noting the potential for new revenue streams from frontier AI models. As the company continues its heavy spending phase, the key monitorable for investors will be whether these new AI products can maintain their adoption momentum and whether the company can successfully manage its cash flow while scaling its infrastructure. Market participants will also be watching the company's upcoming product cycles to see if they can justify these high capital costs over the long term.
