Meta Shares Drop 6% As Muse AI Avatar Launches In US

Meta has introduced real-time video and voice chat features for its Muse AI agent across the US. However, shares fell by 5-7% on the same day as investors weighed concerns over the company's rising capital spending and recent financial outlook downgrades.

Meta Platforms has expanded the capabilities of its Muse AI agent, rolling out a real-time video and voice chat feature for users in the United States. This update allows the AI to interact using customizable digital avatars that can mimic human facial expressions and gestures in real time. The company intends for this technology to serve as a foundation for its broader hardware ecosystem, including upcoming AI Glasses and a new wearable device called the Muse Charm.

While the company highlighted these technological advancements, the market reaction was negative. Meta's stock declined by approximately 5% to 7% on November 5, 2026, as investors focused on broader financial pressures rather than the product launch. The sell-off follows growing concern regarding the company’s aggressive spending strategy on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Financial data from the third quarter of 2026 has raised questions about the company's current capital allocation. Meta reported a free cash flow deficit of $2.12 billion for the quarter. Additionally, the company is facing significant pressure from planned capital spending, which is projected to reach between $135 billion and $145 billion for the full year 2026. These high costs are aimed at building out data centers and AI computing power, but they have put immediate pressure on the company's available cash.

The financial outlook for Meta has also drawn attention from credit rating agencies. S&P Global Ratings recently revised the company's outlook to negative, citing concerns over the high level of debt and lease obligations incurred to fund these expansive AI projects. Compounding these issues is a recent $9.89 billion legal settlement charge recorded in the third quarter, which has further impacted the company's bottom line.

For investors, the key challenge remains the timing of revenue returns from these massive AI investments. While Meta aims to integrate its AI technology into consumer hardware like the Muse Charm, there is currently limited evidence of material earnings from these new AI initiatives. Investors are likely to track whether the company can maintain its pace of innovation while demonstrating more discipline in its spending, or if the current strategy will continue to weigh on free cash flow and profit margins in the coming quarters.
