Meta Platforms began significant job cuts on Wednesday, laying off approximately 8,000 employees as part of a major strategic shift toward artificial intelligence. This workforce reduction represents about 10% of the company's global staff, with notifications delivered in waves starting early Wednesday.
AI-Native Restructuring
The layoffs are driven by Meta's accelerated push into AI, prompting a restructuring that prioritizes AI-native design. HR chief Janelle Gale instructed North American staff to work from home during the notification process, a common practice for large-scale layoffs at Meta.
Gale noted in an internal memo, "We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership," indicating a move toward leaner, more agile teams.
Financial Commitments to AI
These workforce changes coincide with substantial financial investments in AI. Meta projects capital expenditures between $125 billion and $145 billion through 2026, primarily for AI data centers, custom silicon, and model training, highlighting the strategic importance of AI for the company's future.
Employee Sentiment and AI Tool Concerns
The human impact of these changes is noticeable internally, with employee ratings on Blind showing a decline in Meta's overall score and culture rating since early 2024. The layoffs also follow employee concerns about surveillance. A new internal tool, the Model Capability Initiative, designed to log keystrokes and mouse movements for training AI agents, prompted an employee petition. CEO Mark Zuckerberg clarified the data is strictly for training AI on work processes, not for surveillance.
Additional targeted cuts are expected in the coming weeks as Meta continues to reshape its business units.
