SmartMast Revolutionizes Maritime Data

Oceans present a vast challenge for monitoring, a problem Quartermaster is tackling with its "SmartMast" system. This innovative solution comprises weather-hardened sensors, including cameras and radios, mounted on ship masts. These sensors relay real-time maritime data, which is then interpreted by an advanced analytics platform, creating what the company terms a "continuous, distributed sensing network"—akin to a collective intelligence for ships.

Addressing Deficiencies in Current Systems

Quartermaster CEO Neil Sobin highlights that "SmartMast" is significantly more advanced than the current Automatic Identification System (AIS). AIS, he explains, is basic, relying on location pings and is vulnerable to manipulation. Quartermaster's technology aims to be more resilient against fraud and spoofing, which can facilitate illicit activities such as smuggling and sanctions evasion.

Investor Confidence Fuels Growth

The recent $43 million Series A funding round, co-led by First Round Capital and Quiet Capital, demonstrates strong investor confidence. Bill Trenchard of First Round Capital, an early investor in Uber and Flexport, noted that Quartermaster is "reshaping how maritime operators understand and act on the world's oceans," having solved the scalability issue of bespoke hardware in the maritime sector.

Expanding Applications and Impact

To date, over 600 ships equipped with "SmartMast" have covered 10 million square miles of ocean. The system's primary objectives include identifying vessels, collecting data for marine autonomy research, assisting scientists, and providing crucial insights to governments. Notably, "SmartMast"-equipped ships have already contributed to over 20 successful rescues at sea, underscoring the system's humanitarian and operational value. Quartermaster emphasizes a pro-mariner approach, incentivizing collaboration with seafarers, a model they believe sets them apart from competitors focused solely on selling sensors.
