LTIMindtree Shifts to Short-Term AI Deals Amid Growth Slowdown

LTIMindtree is focusing on short-term artificial intelligence projects to boost revenue after a weak quarter where order inflows fell 25% sequentially to $1.26 billion. With revenue growth at just 1.1%, the company is attempting to improve margins and speed up project delivery. Investors are monitoring how this strategy impacts future profitability, especially as the stock has seen a 30% decline year-to-date.

LTIMindtree is making a tactical shift in its business model, moving toward shorter-tenure artificial intelligence projects. The company aims to complete projects faster, usually within six to 12 months, to speed up revenue collection and move away from long, slow transition phases often seen in large-scale IT contracts. This strategy comes at a time when the company is dealing with a slow growth phase, reporting a sequential revenue increase of just 1.1% in the recent September quarter.

Order Book and Operational Hurdles

Visibility into new business has become a concern for investors following a sharp drop in order inflows. During the second quarter, new orders fell to $1.26 billion, a 25% decline from the previous quarter and a 21% drop compared to the same period last year. While management noted that AI accounts for 13.4% of total revenue, the lack of a clear split between the annual and total contract values has made it difficult for analysts to measure the exact strength of the company's future bookings.

Operating performance is also under pressure. The company reported an operating margin of 15.6%, which fell short of the 15.8% expected by the market. Costs related to integrating the Randstad Technology and Consulting Services business could continue to affect margins in the near term. Additionally, the company continues to face challenges from its joint ventures in Saudi Arabia, which have acted as a drag on overall performance.

Market Reaction and Valuation

LTIMindtree shares have underperformed the broader Nifty IT index, declining over 1% on Monday and extending a year-to-date drop of nearly 30%. The stock is currently trading at 19 times its estimated earnings for the 2028 fiscal year. The market's reaction reflects caution regarding the company’s ability to recover its growth momentum and manage integration expenses.

Moving forward, investors will be watching for signs of improvement in order inflows and the successful integration of recent acquisitions. The company’s ability to improve profit margins while executing this new short-term project strategy will be a key factor in its financial recovery. Future updates on demand for AI services and the company's ability to stabilize its Saudi Arabian operations will also be important for shareholders to track.
