The Karnataka state government has approved the Sustainable Data Centre Policy 2026-31, committing ₹1,300.45 crore to build a green digital infrastructure ecosystem. This policy intends to capture a 12% share of India’s AI-ready data center capacity by 2031, aiming for a total installed capacity of 1 GW. The state intends to address the rising power requirements of modern cloud computing and artificial intelligence by integrating renewable energy and sustainable building standards into the sector's growth.

Incentives for Data Operators

The policy introduces structured financial incentives to attract large-scale investment. Key measures include enhanced capital subsidies for companies that meet specific energy efficiency standards and reimbursement of wheeling charges for power consumption. These incentives are designed to lower the high capital and operating costs that typically define the data center business. For companies in the sector, such support can improve the return on investment for new facilities, as high electricity costs often put pressure on profit margins. Investors may track whether these subsidies attract major domestic and global data center operators to expand their footprint in the state.

Decentralization and Coastal Expansion
