KPIT Tech Revenue Falls 3.6% in Q1; Brokerage Lowers EPS

KPIT Technologies reported a 3.6% sequential revenue decline to USD 177 million in Q1 FY27, missing analyst projections. The company also saw its EBIT margin narrow to 12.3% due to weakness in passenger and commercial vehicle segments. Following these results, Motilal Oswal cut its earnings per share estimates for FY27 and FY28 by 15-23%.

KPIT Technologies faced a challenging start to the 2027 fiscal year, with its recent quarterly performance showing pressure across key business segments. The company’s revenue in constant currency terms slipped by 3.6% compared to the previous quarter, landing at USD 177 million. This performance was weaker than initial market expectations, as the automotive software specialist grappled with a slowdown in demand from original equipment manufacturers.

Segment Weakness Impacts Profitability

The company's core automotive business, which forms the backbone of its earnings, witnessed a contraction during the quarter. The passenger vehicle segment saw a 2.4% decline, while the commercial vehicle business experienced a sharper drop of 12.2% on a quarter-over-quarter basis. This reduced activity directly affected the company's profitability, with EBIT margins falling to 12.3%, a decrease of 360 basis points. The result was significantly lower than the 16% margin mark that many analysts had anticipated.

Earnings Impact and Financial Adjustments

Profitability metrics saw a sharp decline, with the adjusted profit after tax falling to INR 1,164 million. This represents a 28.5% drop from the previous quarter and a 32.3% decrease compared to the same period last year. In response to these figures, Motilal Oswal has lowered its earnings per share estimates for the company. Projections for FY27 have been revised downward by 23%, and FY28 estimates have been adjusted lower by 15%.

These revisions reflect several underlying pressures currently facing the business. Beyond the soft demand from automotive manufacturers, the company is dealing with delays in closing new deals and the impact of the loss attributed to Qorix, a joint venture. Additionally, the broader global supply chain environment remains volatile, creating further uncertainty for short-term project execution.

Investor Monitorables

While the company continues to maintain a specialized position in the automotive software sector, the current focus for investors remains on how management addresses these margin pressures and demand challenges. Key factors to track in the upcoming quarters include the recovery speed in the commercial vehicle segment, the timing of significant deal closures, and the company's ability to stabilize its operating margins. The revised valuation multiple of 22x FY28 estimated earnings, as noted by Motilal Oswal, suggests that market expectations have been recalibrated to account for these ongoing headwinds in the automotive software space.
