Infosys Q1 Bonus Drops 10% Amid Tech Sector Headwinds

Infosys has reported an average performance bonus of 70% for the first quarter of FY27, down 10 percentage points year-on-year. While the company posted a 12.2% rise in quarterly net profit, the lower payout reflects cautious spending in the tech sector. Investors are now tracking the company's guidance and the upcoming phased salary hike rollout.

Infosys has announced an average performance bonus of 70% for eligible employees for the April-June quarter (Q1 FY27). This figure is 10 percentage points lower compared to the same period last year, signaling a cautious approach to cost management as the technology sector navigates a complex economic environment. While the bonus distribution varied by performance and job level, with top performers receiving higher payouts, the overall reduction underscores the pressure companies are facing to maintain margins despite global uncertainties.

Financial performance for the quarter remained solid, with the company reporting a consolidated net profit of ₹7,769 crore, a 12.2% increase year-on-year. Revenue for the quarter stood at ₹48,211 crore, marking a 14% growth compared to the previous year. However, despite these growth figures, the company’s decision to temper bonus payouts aligns with a broader industry trend of prioritizing operational efficiency. The company also narrowed its revenue growth guidance for the fiscal year, a move that investors typically view as a sign of management's conservative outlook on client discretionary spending.

The technology sector is currently dealing with two major pressures: a reduction in large-scale client discretionary spending and the rapid, often disruptive, integration of artificial intelligence into business models. These headwinds are forcing IT majors to balance aggressive investment in AI capabilities with the need to protect profitability. For investors, the bonus payout is an indicator of how the company is balancing its internal cost structure while managing talent retention.

Another key area for investors to monitor is the employee compensation structure, particularly the upcoming salary hikes. Infosys has indicated a phased rollout for annual salary revisions, with the majority of employees expected to receive their hikes in October 2026, followed by senior staff in January 2027. This staggered approach suggests a strategic effort to manage wage inflation and optimize cash flow throughout the fiscal year.

The primary monitorables for shareholders moving forward include the company’s ability to meet its revised annual revenue targets, the stability of operating margins, and the actual impact of AI-led services on long-term deal wins. As the sector faces varying degrees of demand weakness in export markets, the company's ability to maintain high utilization rates while managing a large workforce remains a critical factor for financial health.
