PierSight, an Ahmedabad-based private space-tech startup, is deploying radar satellites to improve maritime surveillance. Traditional satellites often struggle with visibility because they rely on optical cameras, which can be blocked by thick cloud cover or the darkness of night. PierSight is utilizing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology to solve this. SAR systems work differently by actively sending signals toward the Earth, allowing them to capture images regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. This capability is useful for monitoring maritime activities, such as detecting illegal fishing, tracking trade routes, or identifying potential security threats in open waters.
