The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is launching a cloud sovereignty framework requiring air-gapping for mission-critical government data. This policy aims to reduce reliance on foreign cloud hyperscalers and mitigate risks from extraterritorial legal frameworks like the US CLOUD Act. The initiative signals a significant shift in how state entities manage digital infrastructure and procure cloud services.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has initiated a structural change in how India manages sensitive government data. The government is introducing a new cloud sovereignty framework that mandates air-gapping for all mission-critical infrastructure. In simple terms, air-gapping involves physically isolating computer systems from the public internet, ensuring that sensitive data remains inaccessible to external networks, even if a foreign service provider experiences a failure or is compelled to share data under foreign laws.

This policy reflects a growing concern regarding the dominance of global hyperscalers in India's digital ecosystem. By requiring air-gapping, the government intends to insulate its most critical assets from potential geopolitical pressure and policy-driven disruptions. The framework specifically targets vulnerabilities created by extraterritorial laws, such as the US CLOUD Act, which can allow foreign governments to legally access data stored on platforms owned by their domestic corporations, regardless of where that data is physically located.
