Instead of generating sustained momentum, these sales events largely pulled future demand forward, leading to a decline in activity once the promotions ended. This trend reflects a cautious consumer landscape, where buyers are becoming increasingly dependent on discounts rather than making regular, organic purchases.
At the core of this market strain is a significant rise in component costs. Global shortages of memory chips, such as DRAM and NAND, driven by intense demand from AI data centers, have increased manufacturing expenses. To protect their profit margins, smartphone brands have been forced to pass these higher costs on to consumers.
