India’s IT industry is shifting from manpower-heavy growth to an AI-driven model. While AI disrupts traditional entry-level roles, data shows 83,100 AI-related roles were created against 31,921 losses between 2022 and August 2026. For investors, this transition presents a new reality: IT firms are moving toward higher-value, efficiency-driven work, though they face the risk of a widening skills gap and rising re-skilling costs.

The Indian IT services sector is undergoing a fundamental transformation as it moves away from its traditional model of hiring large numbers of entry-level employees for routine tasks. While concerns over job displacement due to Artificial Intelligence have been high, data suggests a more nuanced reality where job creation is occurring alongside restructuring.

AI Hiring Outpaces Losses

A recent Nomura report indicates that between 2022 and August 2026, the Indian market recorded 83,100 AI-related hires, significantly higher than the 31,921 AI-linked job losses identified during the same period. This indicates that while AI is undoubtedly automating routine work, it is also acting as a driver for new opportunities. Companies are shifting their focus from mass recruitment to precision hiring, seeking candidates who have immediate proficiency in AI, machine learning, and advanced data processing.

However, this transition is not seamless. The traditional "hire-and-train" pyramid model—which allowed IT firms to scale quickly by bringing in fresh graduates and training them on the job—is under pressure. Automation tools are replacing these foundational entry-level tasks, such as basic coding and support services. This disruption was highlighted by recent corporate actions, including reports of Visa laying off approximately 1,400 employees, nearly 40% of its India technology center workforce, citing AI-driven productivity gains as a primary reason for global restructuring.

The Challenge of the Skills Gap

For investors, the most critical risk during this transition is the widening skills gap. The workforce currently being displaced by automation often lacks the specialized technical expertise required for the new AI-centric roles. This mismatch means that firms cannot simply swap old staff for new roles. As a result, companies are facing increased pressure to invest in continuous training. According to the IFSC AI Survey 2026, roughly 32% of entities are now prioritizing internal re-skilling programs over net headcount reductions to manage this gap.

While this is a strategic move to retain institutional knowledge, it also implies potential pressure on profit margins. The cost of upskilling thousands of employees, combined with the higher salaries commanded by scarce AI talent, could weigh on the financial performance of IT companies. Investors are closely monitoring how well industry leaders, such as TCS and Infosys, balance these rising operational costs with the efficiency gains promised by their AI integrations.

Monitoring the Shift

Looking ahead, the success of Indian IT firms will depend on how quickly they can convert their manpower-intensive delivery models into AI-agent driven structures. While the net job numbers appear positive, the market remains cautious about the speed of this adjustment. Investors may track future updates on operating margins, the success rates of large-scale re-skilling initiatives, and whether companies can successfully transition their revenue models from traditional man-hour billing to AI-outcome based pricing.
