Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant stated on August 21, 2026, that India is well-positioned to become a leading global destination for artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the 'BT India@100' event, Kant argued that India’s path to success does not require competing directly in building foundational AI models—a race largely led by the US and China—but rather in mastering the deployment and practical application of AI technology across diverse industries.

The strategy focuses on leveraging India's large technical workforce and its status as a major data contributor. Estimates suggest that India will supply nearly 22% of the world's data, providing a critical resource for training and refining AI systems. To support this, the country is seeing a massive surge in infrastructure interest, with planned investments in data centers estimated at around $200 billion. This investment is essential to ensure that data can be processed domestically rather than being exported for foreign AI platforms to monetize.

For investors, this shift toward 'application-first' AI has specific implications. Indian IT services firms are already realigning their businesses to focus on integrating AI tools into healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing. The expansion of data centers is also driving demand for specialized infrastructure, cooling technology, and power supply, which affects companies involved in construction, real estate, and energy distribution. These infrastructure projects are significant, but they also bring operational challenges that the market is watching closely.

However, the rapid push for AI infrastructure carries inherent risks. Building a network of data centers requires massive amounts of electricity and water, which could create stress on utility grids and local resources in regions where these facilities are planned. While there is an influx of skilled professionals returning to India, the demand for machine learning engineers and data scientists is outpacing the current supply. This labor shortage could push up wage costs for tech firms, potentially impacting profit margins if companies cannot pass these costs on to customers. Furthermore, if educational and skilling programs do not catch up quickly, the potential for AI-driven growth could be stalled.
