India Semiconductor Sector Hits $1.4 Billion Funding Milestone

India's semiconductor industry has reached $1.4 billion in cumulative equity funding, with momentum accelerating since 2025. While the sector is growing, investors should note that challenges like talent gaps and heavy import dependence remain key factors to watch.

India’s semiconductor ecosystem has reached a significant milestone, with cumulative equity funding crossing the $1.4 billion mark as of September 2026. This growth represents a major shift in the industry, which now encompasses over 3,557 companies. Data shows that investors are increasingly backing the sector, with nearly half of this total funding—roughly $701 million—raised since 2025 alone.

Growth Drivers and Hubs

The funding surge is not uniform across the country. Bengaluru remains the clear leader in the sector, accounting for approximately 40% of all equity funding and hosting a significant portion of the ecosystem's firms. Other major hubs include Noida, Gurugram, Kochi, and Hyderabad. Within the broader semiconductor landscape, the Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) segment has emerged as the most funded area, attracting $313 million in capital since 2025. This focus on manufacturing aligns with broader efforts to build self-reliance in a sector that has historically relied on external supply chains.

Moving from Startups to Public Markets

The industry is also showing signs of maturation. While 281 companies have secured funding, the exit landscape—how early investors cash out—is evolving. The sector has recorded 62 acquisitions and 42 IPOs, indicating that some companies are successfully scaling up to public listings. Notable recent public entries, such as the listings of Tempsens Instruments and Merritronix, highlight this trend. These exits provide confidence to private equity and venture capital investors, who are now providing larger rounds to established players like Tessolve Semiconductor, ILJIN Electronics, and VVDN.

Risks and Structural Challenges

While the funding growth is positive, investors must look at the structural risks. The Indian semiconductor industry currently depends on imports for over 80% of its requirements. This high level of dependency makes companies vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions. Additionally, the sector faces a persistent shortage of specialized design talent, which can delay projects and raise costs.

Investors should also be aware of the long gestation periods involved in this business. Setting up design or manufacturing units requires significant time and high working capital before a company can generate consistent profit. Policy changes, taxation, and labor laws also remain critical variables that can affect long-term returns.

What to Track Next

The industry is preparing for the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026, scheduled for September 17–19 in New Delhi. This event, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is likely to feature policy discussions and partnership announcements that could influence the sector's growth trajectory. For investors, the focus will remain on how companies manage their operational costs, their ability to navigate global supply chain dependencies, and the success of newer, large-scale manufacturing projects.
