India Deeptech Funding Reaches Record $2.96 Billion in 2025

India’s deeptech sector secured a record $2.96 billion in 2025, even as broader startup funding faced a slowdown. This shift reflects growing investor interest in AI, EVs, and semiconductors, which now account for 15% of all venture capital activity. While the sector shows momentum, investors should track risks like long development cycles and challenges in finding clear exit routes for capital.

India's deeptech companies secured a record $2.96 billion in funding in 2025, standing out as a bright spot despite a general downturn in the broader startup ecosystem. This growth in capital shows a clear preference among investors for frontier technologies. The momentum appears to be continuing into 2026, with startups raising nearly $1 billion across 103 rounds by mid-July.

A Structural Shift in Venture Capital

The nature of venture capital in India is evolving. While deeptech—which includes AI, semiconductors, space technology, and advanced materials—previously played a minor role, it has become a central focus. Data indicates that deeptech now accounts for approximately 15% of all venture capital and private equity activity in India, a significant increase from just 4% in 2016. This shift marks a move away from simple consumer internet models toward more complex, research-heavy businesses that require specialized engineering and longer development timelines.

Capital Needs and Growth Stages

The funding data shows that capital is heavily concentrated in later stages. While Series C and follow-on rounds represent only 7% of all deal counts, they captured 35% of the total capital invested in 2025. This pattern highlights the reality of deeptech businesses: they need massive amounts of money to move from laboratory-scale testing to commercial production. Without sustained access to large, patient capital, these companies often struggle to scale their operations efficiently.

Challenges and Investor Risks

While the growth figures are positive, the sector faces distinct hurdles that investors should recognize. One of the primary concerns is exit visibility. Approximately 62% of investment funds identify the lack of clear exit pathways—such as public listings or acquisitions—as a major risk factor. Unlike consumer businesses that may scale quickly, deeptech ventures often have very long gestation periods, meaning investors may have to wait many years before seeing a return on their money.

Furthermore, the ecosystem is grappling with a shortage of specialized talent. There is a limited pool of experts capable of evaluating highly technical, niche projects. This creates a risk where decision-making can become difficult, and in some instances, concerns have been raised regarding potential conflicts of interest in the allocation of government-backed research and innovation funds.

Government Support and Future Outlook

Government policy remains a major support factor for the sector. Initiatives like the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund and the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 are designed to de-risk investments and provide the necessary infrastructure for domestic chip manufacturing and advanced research. The ultimate success of these companies will depend on their ability to move from experimental technology to reliable, large-scale commercial products that can compete with global alternatives.
