India Data Breach Costs Hit Record ₹25.5 Crore in 2026

The average cost of a data breach in India rose by 15.9% to a record ₹25.5 crore in 2026, according to a new IBM report. Companies failing to adopt AI and security automation are facing significantly higher financial losses compared to those that have integrated these technologies. This trend highlights the growing urgency for businesses to strengthen their cybersecurity budgets and governance frameworks.

The financial impact of cybersecurity incidents in India reached a new high in 2026, with the average cost of a data breach climbing to ₹25.5 crore. This represents a 15.9% increase from the ₹22 crore average recorded in 2025, according to the latest data from the IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report. Beyond the rising costs, the scope of these incidents has also expanded, with the average number of compromised records per breach reaching approximately 39,500, compared to 38,200 in the previous year.

The rapid rise in sophisticated, AI-generated malicious attacks is a primary driver behind these figures. IBM data indicates that 26% of all malicious breaches in India are now driven by AI, which allows attackers to execute operations with greater speed, scale, and complexity. While artificial intelligence is often touted for its innovative capabilities, it has become a double-edged sword for corporate security, forcing organizations to rethink their defense strategies.

The Financial Cost of Low AI Adoption

There is a clear financial divide based on how effectively companies integrate AI into their security infrastructure. Organizations that have not adopted AI and security automation are bearing a significantly heavier burden, with an average breach cost of ₹31.6 crore. In contrast, businesses that have extensively deployed these technologies reported an average cost of ₹21.3 crore. Despite this, only 32% of Indian organizations have fully integrated AI into their security setups, while another 32% have yet to implement any AI-driven security strategy at all.

Sector Vulnerability and Attack Methods

Certain industries are facing more intense pressure than others. The financial services sector recorded the highest average breach costs at ₹40.9 crore, followed by the technology sector at ₹35.7 crore and the communications sector at ₹34.5 crore. These sectors are frequent targets due to the high value of the data they handle. Phishing remains the most common entry point for attackers, accounting for 19% of all breaches, followed by methods such as drive-by compromises and attacks on supply chain vulnerabilities.

Future Security Investments

In response to these threats, 73% of the surveyed organizations intend to increase their spending on security tools and governance. Companies are placing a higher priority on incident response, identity and access management, and specialized training for employees. The use of proactive security measures, such as red teaming and penetration testing, has also been shown to reduce the financial impact of a breach by an average of ₹2.47 crore. The next critical update for investors will be whether companies can effectively translate these planned spending increases into measurable improvements in data protection and reduced recovery costs during future quarters.
