Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed 'E-Eye,' a low-cost, portable device for real-time detection of water toxicants. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have introduced an innovative optical sensing device named 'E-Eye,' designed to provide immediate, on-site detection of contaminants in water and biological samples. The device addresses a critical need in water quality management by allowing for rapid testing of pollutants like heavy metals, including arsenic, lead, iron, and chromium, alongside harmful bacteria such as E. coli.

Technology and Cost Efficiency

The 'E-Eye' functions by using chemical reactions that create colored compounds when toxicants are present. The intensity of this color is measured by the device, which uses basic optical principles to calculate the concentration of pollutants. This process converts physical samples into digital data, which can then be transmitted wirelessly to central monitoring facilities. This method serves as a portable, low-cost alternative to traditional laboratory equipment, such as UV-Visible and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers.

From a cost perspective, the device is designed to be affordable. The development cost is approximately Rs 3,500, with a per-sample testing cost estimated at Rs 2. These figures are expected to decrease as the technology moves toward mass production, making it potentially viable for widespread deployment in field settings where laboratory access is limited.

Commercialization via ENVIONIX Labs

The technology is being transitioned from an academic research project to a commercial product through a startup called ENVIONIX Labs Pvt Ltd. This move indicates a shift toward integrating laboratory-proven innovations into the market. While IIT Guwahati is a public academic institution and not a listed company, the formation of this startup represents a typical pathway for deeptech innovations in India, where research-led solutions attempt to bridge the gap between development and industry application.
