HP Names Former GSK CEO Emma Walmsley as New Chief Executive

HP Inc. has appointed former GSK leader Emma Walmsley as its next CEO, effective January 4, 2027. She succeeds interim CEO Bruce Broussard, who will move to the role of Board Chair as the company pivots toward AI integration.

HP Inc. has officially named Emma Walmsley as its new Chief Executive Officer, a move set to reshape the company’s leadership starting January 4, 2027. Walmsley, who led GSK as CEO from 2017 to 2025 and currently serves on the board of Microsoft, will take over from interim CEO Bruce Broussard. Upon the transition, Broussard is scheduled to become the Chair of the Board.

The appointment marks a notable change for the technology company as it navigates a challenging hardware landscape. HP has been focusing on its core printing and personal computing businesses while attempting to adjust to shifting global demand. Walmsley’s background in large-scale corporate management is viewed as a signal that the board is looking to strengthen operational execution and navigate the company's long-term growth strategy.

Following the announcement, HP Inc. shares saw a decline of approximately 1% to 2% in pre-market trading. Executive leadership transitions often bring a period of uncertainty for investors, who typically watch for potential changes in capital allocation, operational restructuring, or shifts in core business priorities.

A key part of the transition involves HP’s stated strategic focus on integrating artificial intelligence into its product lineup. Analysts and investors will be looking for clarity on how this AI integration will be executed within the personal computing and printing divisions. The ability to successfully pivot toward these technologies while managing the pressures of the hardware market will be a primary indicator of the new leadership's direction.

Investors will likely monitor the company’s upcoming communications for details on the new strategic roadmap. The primary areas of interest include the stability of the management transition, the speed of the AI integration process, and how the company plans to address the broader headwinds affecting the sector. The success of this new leadership chapter will depend on how effectively the firm balances its established revenue streams with these new technology objectives.
