Google is advancing augmented reality with its new Android XR glasses, unveiled at Google I/O 2026. The devices are designed for seamless smartphone integration, using Gemini AI to offer helpful, on-the-spot information.
Gemini Powers Real-Time Interaction
Gemini AI provides users with immediate details about their environment. This includes information like restaurant reviews, identifying plants or animals, or understanding signs, all based on what the glasses see and their context. Navigation is also improved, with directions that change based on the user's location and where they are looking. Gemini can even suggest different routes or nearby places to eat based on user preferences.
Enhanced Communication and Content Capture
The glasses allow for hands-free calls and messaging. Gemini can summarize incoming messages, delivering audio responses through private over-ear speakers so you don't need to check your phone. Users can also take photos and videos directly. AI-powered editing tools let you change images with voice commands, like adding fun effects.
Seamless Translation and App Integration
Live translation for both spoken conversations and written text is a major feature, designed to keep the original speaker's tone. Pointing the glasses at menus or signs will provide audio translations. Google showed Gemini completing tasks like ordering coffee through DoorDash. The glasses also integrate with apps like Uber and Mondly, accessible via voice commands.
