Developers must optimize their apps by February 2027 to avoid reduced visibility on the Google Play Store. This shift reflects a broader industry trend where high-demand AI infrastructure is limiting memory capacity for consumer smartphones.

Google has announced new, stricter performance requirements for all Android developers. The move follows rising hardware constraints caused by a global shortage of memory chips, as semiconductor manufacturers increasingly prioritize the production of high-margin memory for AI data centers over components used in consumer electronics.

With the release of Android 17, Google is implementing specific, per-app memory limits. These updates are designed to prevent individual applications from consuming excessive system resources, which has become a primary cause of device lag, interface stuttering, and unexpected app closures on lower-end handsets.

Developers are now under a defined timeline to audit and optimize their software. Google has set a deadline of February 2027 for applications to meet new performance thresholds regarding dynamic memory and bitmap usage. Additionally, by April 2027, all applications—excluding games for now—must implement Zero-Tap Sign-In protocols using the Android Restore Credentials API. This requirement aims to facilitate seamless user migration between devices.

Failure to comply with these updated standards may result in significant consequences, including reduced search visibility or restricted publishing capabilities on the Google Play Store. This policy change presents a new operational challenge, particularly for smaller development teams that may face increased costs and engineering burdens to re-engineer their codebases to fit within these tighter memory budgets.

This policy change highlights structural pressures in the technology supply chain.
