Google Allows Optional Visible AI Watermarks on Gemini Content

Google (Alphabet) now lets users toggle off visible watermarks on AI-generated media to improve professional usability. While this change increases creative control, the company is maintaining mandatory invisible tracking for safety. This move arrives as global regulators, including in India, increase scrutiny over AI disclosure and potential misinformation risks.

Alphabet-owned Google has introduced a new feature allowing users to remove visible watermarks from media generated by its Gemini models, including images, videos, and music. This update specifically targets professional creators who have found that visible branding can limit the use of AI tools in various commercial and creative projects.

The feature, which applies to the company’s Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria models, will be accessible through a media watermark toggle in user settings. To maintain safety and accountability, Google clarified that mandatory invisible watermarks, known as SynthID, and industry-standard metadata, such as C2PA, will remain embedded in all AI-generated files. This approach allows the company to satisfy the demand for cleaner, professional-grade content while retaining the technical ability to identify AI origins.

For investors, this shift highlights the ongoing operational challenge of balancing product usability with regulatory transparency. As AI technology becomes more deeply integrated into enterprise and creative workflows, companies face increasing pressure from regulators in markets like India, the European Union, and the United States to ensure clear disclosure of AI-generated content. The potential for AI-generated media to be used for misinformation remains a primary risk factor, and the removal of visible branding could lead to heightened scrutiny from authorities if the technology is used for deceptive purposes.

Google has also released an open-source library, Credentio, to assist developers in verifying content authenticity locally within their own applications. In specific markets, including India, South Korea, and Vietnam, access to these advanced features may be tied to paid subscription tiers, such as AI Ultra. This suggests a monetization strategy where premium users receive more control over their output.

Moving forward, the effectiveness of these safety measures will be a key area of focus. Investors may monitor how these AI-driven products affect enterprise adoption rates and whether the company's approach to safety standards continues to satisfy evolving government disclosure requirements in major global markets.
