Walmart-owned Flipkart is launching food delivery services in Bengaluru on August 15 using the government-backed ONDC network. The company aims to challenge incumbents by charging restaurants a lower commission of approximately 10%.
Flipkart is scheduled to begin its food delivery operations in Bengaluru by August 15, marking the e-commerce giant's entry into a sector currently dominated by Zomato and Swiggy. This launch will be integrated into both the main Flipkart application and a dedicated food delivery app, utilizing the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) infrastructure rather than creating a closed, proprietary marketplace.
Disrupting Commission Models
A central part of Flipkart’s strategy is its pricing. The company is offering restaurant partners a commission rate of roughly 10%. In contrast, established market leaders often charge commissions ranging from 16% to 30%. By significantly undercutting these rates, Flipkart intends to attract a large base of restaurant partners. This model is designed to lower the barrier for merchants to join the digital delivery ecosystem, though its long-term financial viability will depend on the company's ability to manage logistics and customer acquisition costs at scale.
Competitive Landscape and Strategic Risks
The Indian food delivery market remains highly concentrated, with Zomato and Swiggy controlling a vast majority of the volume. Flipkart is entering a space where competition is intensifying from multiple directions. For instance, Rapido has already introduced a food delivery service with a zero-commission model for restaurants, putting further pressure on standard industry fee structures. While Flipkart’s lower commission could appeal to restaurants, the company faces the challenge of building a delivery fleet and ensuring service quality in a market where consumers have become accustomed to the rapid delivery times and established loyalty programs of existing players. Ashish Vijayvergiya, formerly the chief of staff to Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, is heading this initiative as the company looks to expand its service offerings beyond traditional e-commerce.
Monitoring the Pilot
Flipkart is currently in the process of onboarding restaurant partners and testing operations within Bengaluru. This initial rollout is a controlled pilot, and the company has indicated that any future national expansion will be based on the operational results and performance metrics achieved during this period. For investors, the key monitorables will be the actual pickup rate by restaurant partners, the consistency of delivery times, and the company's ability to maintain these commission rates while covering operational expenses in a high-burn sector. Future updates regarding user adoption and potential expansion into other cities will provide clarity on whether this ONDC-led strategy can effectively gain market share from established incumbents.
